Friday night we rolled up to Park City to do some shopping. It was a well needed getaway. The rest of the weekend looks pretty relaxing. Just what I need.
Smoke as far as the eye can seee. You can feel the tension in the air
70 foot drape with an enormous KISS logo in silver tension builds and then it builds a little more and then the draped wall comes down and
there is leather, spikes, make up, hair, what looks like weapons at first ,,, but upon closer inspection they are the instruments these monsters of rock will use to slay each and every one of us!
And then they unleashed the weapons!
They were freinds … friends who were lost … looking to Rock Detroit Rock City!
The screams! The wailing guitar the piercing voice of Paul the pounding bass of the bat.
It was calm … it was peaceful … it was beautiful … but in the back of your mind you always felt there was something more. Well men, women, children of all ages …. MORE has arrived! The devious mastermind behind ImStillIll is looking at social media in a whole new way. Freed up some time and resources, began work on some very exciting projects and still manages to go to almost every concert that rolls through the wonderful Salt Lake Valley!
We are going to have some fun here baby! I will discuss in tedious detail what a fabulous day I had, why I am cooler than you because I just got home from a sweet concert, or just a little discussion on the kind person I just met or the awesome yet unnecessary construction traffic jam I just sat it.
(This part could be read in Mel Gibson’s voice from Braveheart if you would like)The ImStillIll 3-6 month hiatus that sometimes has happened in the past is no more! My fans deserve better! those 2 people have really helped me out and I will not let them down! I will be conducting giveaways, personal appearances (I was thinking I could come over to your house and have dinner with you), we could maybe look at cars together some time and I could convey all my automobile wisdom unto you, or you could just come over and take my dogs for a walk or something. The important thing is I AM HERE FOR YOU GUYS! And I am honored that although you lost a bet and had to come read this you followed through on it!
To quote William Wallace “Every man dies. Not every man really lives.” Well this blog isn’t going to kill you (unless you have a preexisting condition with your funny bone) and it also isnt going to make you feel you are living the High-Life, but it is something to do from point A to point Z and maybe get a chuckle or two.
I have a few concert reviews and a few other things planned but I would love to provide my devout friends with some movie reviews. Feel free to leave a comment as to a movie you would like reviewed. Also leave a comment on if you got here by QR code … I am curious.
To quote Elvis “Thank you, Thank you very much” ImStillIll has left the building!
Tonight I saw a legend perform. I don’t really throw that word around a lot, but tonight it hits the nail right on the head.
I was very excited for this show. Paul McCartney in his first ever Utah performance. And Perform he did. He isn’t just a singer, He isn’t just an amazing bassist, he isn’t just an amazing song writer, keyboardist or guitarist. At the end of the night you know he is a PERFORMER first and foremost. (and he is loving every minute of it) Paul has no financial worries, nothing to prove, and no real reason he needs to perform other than he loves it. It was very clear by his smile and attitude he was there because he loves performing for all of his fans.
A couple additional facts … He played almost 3 hours. (3 serious hours too) He played bass, guitar, piano, ukulele and sang. He told stories about the songs and times he has had. He kept +25,00 people captivated the entire time … oh yeah, and he is almost 70. I have to be honest here … if i am able to keep 3 people interested for 10 minutes while I eat stewed prunes at 70 well I am going to start wondering where my Emmy Award is.
In today’s day and age of celebrities (and your run of the mill person as well) egos totally out of control … (LeBron and ‘The Decision’, I promise I tried to leave basketball out of this) being so out of control, it was great to see someone just have an absolute blast doing what he does best. I also guessed he would play ‘Yesterday’ as one of the first song for the encore which was just wonderful. My brother-in-law and sister-in-law came with us and we were all blown away by what we had seen. Just an absolutely wonderful night. If he wasn’t already Knighted I would have done it tonight on the queens behalf. He is right up there with Lancelot, Sir Bedivere, and Sir Galahad.
Thanks for giving Utah a shot Paul. WE loved it.
P.S. Those of us awho are a bit taller than the norm … we, or at least I feel bad when I am standing in front of you at a concert. I wish you had eaten more veggies and drank more milk like I had when I was a kid. But I am sorry.
P.S.S. While I kind of have your attention I would appreciate a visit to www.darrenottley.com and let me know what you think. It is my portfolio site. XOXOXO
So work has been stressful, family life has been somewhat stressful, our cars are falling apart which is also causing stress, time is flying by like I can’t believe and I am feeling older by the minute, (I don’t have to tell you that is adding to the stress)
While driving home from work to get ready to take Aves to her first soccer game, my mind started to wander back to the care free days of my youth and my first soccer games.
Ever since I was a little kid I have loved animated shows of almost every sort. Waking up at 5 in the morning on Saturday and watching the rainbow lines on the tv forever until the cartoons started was a weekly occurrence. (Why was it so difficult for me to wake up on the weekdays some may ask? Well in all my years of schooling not ONCE did an ACME Anvil fall out of the sky and clobber someone, nobody fell off of a cliff and before they plummeted to the bottom and became a little “POOF” of a cloud, did they suspend themselves in mid air and hold up a sine that said “Yikes!”) If these things were happening at Orem Elementary well you better believe I would have been up at the crack of dawn just dying to get there.
So on to the top 5 list (that will be expanded today to 10)
Maxx first aired on mtv’s liquid television. The story of him being a loner in New York with a crush on his service worker and then instantly switches to her being a Zulu princess in the outback he must protect is great. The animation is wonderful as well.
“More Cheeeeese Gromit!”
I have loved Nick Parks work since my first animation festival and saw “Creature Comforts” (If you haven’t seen it you really should! It even won him an Oscar.) Inventions, detective work, British accents, looking out for your buddy and everybody’s favorite … CHEESE!
So I guess this one really boils down to I like to swing around on stuff. Now if it happens to be webs that I can shoot out of my wrists (and it makes a cool ‘THWIPPP’ sound …. well all the better. Plus walking up walls, being really strong and being more bendy that that lame guy at the yoga studio all have their advantages.
No. 7 – Green Lantern
“Cool ring … Fabulous hair! Perfect”
Not totally sure why Green Lantern becasme one of my favorites. Maybe becasue anytime I put on a ring of any sorts I always thought “This may be the one that gives me super powers. So far the only super power is to take a long story and make it even longer. 🙂
Just a funny little guy with big plans and a short temper. His Nemesis coming up.
So I always have really enjoyed Tim Burton’s work, but this one took everything to a new level. All the characters are so original and wonderful. This movie (which both of my daughters LOVE… even added a very embarrassing moment to my life. We were at a funeral and Avery asked out loud if she could take OFF her head while standing next to the coffin. There is a part where Jack says and because I am dead I can take off my head and quote Shakespearean quotations.
So every afternoon from probably 2nd to 4th grade it was a mad dash to the TV at 2:30 (i think) to see Battle of the Planets! (or G-Force as we called it) And Jason was the man. Although 2nd in command to Mark he had a hell of a temper and a no-nonsense approach to getting the bad guys. More of a shoot until nothing moves and then fire a few more rockets just because we have rockets. He drove a cool car and had a cool gun to boot. He is right up there with the Duke Boys and Knight Rider as great role models for kids.
He is a jerk, He is funny, he is self-centered and he is just a riot! If Daffy Duck is on well you know where you can find me. It’s wabbit season … It;s duck season.
No. 1- BullwinkleBullwinkle is funny …. plain and simple slapstick funny. I have bought many of the episodes and literally Laugh Out Loud every time. Timeless wonderful fun for everyone of any age.
An empty 7-up can, business cards, (his as well as other peoples) a skymiles card which clearly shows he doesn’t travel a lot for business, 2 tape measures, yeah that was 2 tape measures and believe me if i ever need to measure something they most certainly will not be sitting right there all handy and stuff, a really cool yo-yo, enough firewire cables to make any videographer happy, and last count around 16 billion cds containing … well probably stuff (except the blank ones that are mixed in, 2 half empty water bottles, (I have recently started drinking water for really the first time in my life) an old drivers license with a somewhat less than dashing photo of yours truly, 2 pairs of headphones, a Fallout 3 video game I need to return to Chet, picture frames i need to put pictures in, a dish towel, (not sure how that got here) 2 NCAA basketball tournaments stating that I really know nothing about basketball, 3 lava lamps, (they actually belong here) a bunch of sketches of this that and the other thing, more external hard drives than google, one of those squeezie things to work your forearms out, toenail clippers, a bottle cap, 3 pens that don’t work and a cup of pens that do work, a bottle of excedrine, a flash light, 3 action figures (Captain Caveman, Johnny Quest and Dwayne Wade) and last but not least my Morrissey bobble head. … and if I printed this out and set it on the desk I could add Worst Post Ever to the list.
So just to give you a slightly better idea of how I need to clean my desk of I will paint you a mental picture and then just show you some pictures. So lets say you are an ant. And unfortunately for you you found a ring … a ring to rule them all … and for some reason all the other ants say you have to go on a long journey that could span the length of 3 really long movies. Well the scary, difficult, anguish riddin, spirit breaking scenes could all be shot right here. (Peter Jackson … are you reading this??? My rates are reasonable buddy!)
Sorry but i am unable at this time to give you back those two minutes of your life you just wasted. 🙂
MARCH MADNESS! Utes, (I know not this year but still), UNC, Dickie V Baby, Cinderella Story, Kansas, From Way Down Town!, Georgetown, He’s a PTP’er, Villanova, Duke, Dunks that make you jump up off the couch … grab the remote and praise the guy who added the rewind function to live TV, The Teams You Never Heard of Before that make it in (… and then go on to win the first 2 rounds) Man I love March Madness. It is so awesome in fact, it is managing to over shadow whatever stupid press conference that Tiger Woods is holding this week. (I didn’t think that could be done)This is the best sporting event there is. (yeah yeah yeah … world cup … global… blah blah blah … go write your own blog post we are talking basketball here) Super Bowl? Not a chance. World Series? I have heard that is still being played. Please nobody udder the words “Datona 500”! College football championship game? I live in Utah people and I feel our opinions on that governing body have been clearly stated. Wrestle Mainia? Ok now I am clearly going off on a tangent.
Kids giving it there all and in some cases a ton more than they ever thought they had in the first place. Where ANY team can be beaten at any time. (although Kansas has less of a chance that happening this year) 64 teams putting everything on the line. No money, just bragging rights for their school, their team and their fans.
Who are you picking to win it all. (anyone who says BYU is going to get a frowny face next to their name!)
So here we are again. So this blog is going to take a turn towards concert reviews, but don’t worry devout fan base (all 3 of you) there will still be plenty of complaining and thoughts on how the world needs to change.
So the last show I went to was an acoustic performance by Gene Loves Jezebel. There were 3 bands that opened and one of them sounded in the relm of Sisters of Mercy. (Nice!) The other 2 quite forgettable except the 2 man band (1 guy yelling and one guy practicing his fine tuned skillz on pressing play on itunes) the singer was hitting himself with a hammer in the head. I am assuming the hammer was from the Nerf construction collection or the guy had a big old honkin metal plate in his head. … ok that has been covered … back to Gene
Michaels voice still sounds amazing. One of the songs I really wanted to hear was ‘Cow’ which they played the first song. He played some of the other hits, Desire and heartache but left off some big ones as well. He did get roped into a rendition of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Black Dog’ which was pretty cool. Never would have guessed that was coming up.
All in all it was a fun show and had a great turn out of friends which was great. I would suggest in the future maybe not have the opening band go on after midnight on a Monday since some of us (mainly just the group I was with 😉 ) have jobs and have to get up early for the next day.
“What you get is what you see … Shhhuuu Khaaaa …. Desire!
So the Neon Trees are finally getting the air play to so very much deserve. I had the opportunity back when I was school to help out with the audio for their record release party. It was fun getting everything together but I was blow away by how good they were. This band took control of Velour and had the crowd going crazy from the first song. I bought there album and a live demo album they had recorded the night before. I have always had Neon Trees on the Ipod ever since. Go check them out if they come to your neck of the woods. You won’t be disappointed my friends.
(I don’t know who took the picture but I love it. If someone knows please let me know so I can credit them. Well done!)
